8th Grade Parents -WASA needs you for 'Last Night'

Please read this important message from WASA

Hi Eighth Grade Parents!

With your eighth grader going into Westford Academy next year, we wanted to tell you
about a great volunteer opportunity that involves just one evening of your time. You do
not need a child at WA to participate. This is one of the few times that parents get the
chance to be involved at WA in what has become a Westford tradition!

It’s “Last Night - the all-night substance free celebration for WA graduating seniors.
Almost 400 kids will celebrate their accomplishments one last time together.
It takes almost 300 volunteers as the community comes together to celebrate this
important milestone. Westford Academy is transformed! The decorating committee
does an amazing job of disguising the place :) You’ll have to see it to believe it!

Graduates arrive at 10pm on graduation night and are entertained with games, live
entertainment and plenty of food to eat before they depart early the next
morning. They leave with lifelong memories of hanging out together one last time with
their classmates!

We, Kristen McGrath and Anna Ward, chair the Hall Games committee. Here students
play carnival games with the chance to win gift cards to “high school friendly” places
such places as Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, Kimballs and more. We are looking for
volunteers to work the 9:30pm to 2am shift on Friday, June 3rd. Yay - you don't have to
stay up all night! Time flies and before you know it, it is time to go home. You leave
knowing that you helped keep 400 kids safe (and happy!) on graduation night. You also
have the insider scoop on what your child will experience when they graduate. Yes, the
time flies by!!

We’re looking for moms and dads to help. Volunteer with a friend if you like - that’s how
we started years ago! Call or write if any questions. Just say YES and we will sign you
up!!

Cheers,
Anna healyward@verizon.net

Principal's News 1/30/16

Good Morning Blanchard Families,

Some important events, including an A.L.i.C.E. drill and the ninth grade course selection timeline, are detailed in this week's news.

School Safety

Last week, Superintendent Olsen sent a message to parents pertaining to district safety protocols in light of recent events in nearby communities. Following a school safety meeting with the district leadership team and Westford Chief of Police Tom McEnaney, I met with our school-based crisis teams to review our protocols and prepare for a drill during the upcoming week. The drills, which will continue intermittently throughout the year, are an opportunity for students to practice responding to emergency situations following A.L.i.C.E. protocols. Our goal is to develop our students' competence and confidence in these procedures so that they can be conducted with an efficiency and fluency similar to our fire drills.

Course Selection Information for Eighth Grade
Parents of eighth grade students are strongly encouraged to attend an upcoming curriculum information night on February 10 at 6:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center at Westford Academy. W.A. Peer counselors will be available beginning at 6 p.m. to give interested parents a tour of Westford Academy beforehand.

Ninth Grade Course Selection Timeline
February 10 – W.A. Parent Information Night
February 11 – W.A. Program of Studies Presentation at Blanchard
February 12 – Course recommendations released in iParent and iStudent (view only) for review over February break
February 22-26 – Students and parents discuss recommendations with teachers and enter elective choices

Other news and reminders:
•    District mathematics curriculum coordinators, Mrs. O'Gorman and Mrs. Coughlin, will be holding informational meetings for parents in grades 4-7 to communicate the math placement process. These meetings are scheduled for March 2 at 6:30 at Blanchard and March 7 at 6:30 at John A. Crisafulli Elementary School.
•    This Monday, February 1 is transition day for our sixth grade world languages FLEX program.
•    Sixth grade students interested in being a judge for this year’s Massachusetts Children’s Book Awards must read and log at least 5 of the candidate books by March 17th. Students can check out the books from the MCBA section at the Blanchard library or the J.V. Fletcher Library. When a student finishes a book, he/she should record it in our MCBA log. Mrs. Brandt will have Valentines treats for all students who have logged at least one book before February break.
•    Yearbooks are now available to order online! Place your order here using code #12276916.

Mrs. Leone's seventh grade Guidance classes recently wrapped up their stress management unit with a little bit of healthy competition. To showcase and share their learning with classmates, students created posters to highlight different strategies teenagers can use to cope with stress in healthy ways. The first place winners of the poster competition, created by Casey Fairchild and Audrey Bruskiewitz, are shared below!

Enjoy the weekend! Be sure to read the additional reminders from around the Westford community.

Sincerely,
Tim
